Game of Thrones Season 7: #WinterIsHere Trailer #2

New George RR Martin story The Sons of the Dragon due out this October | Books | The Guardian

News on another of Martin’s side stories via The Guardian. As interesting as it is to get more backstory, I don’t find these historical novellas to be as good as the Dunk and Egg stories. Plus, there is the whole, not finished with the main series yet thing.

Game of Thrones author George RR Martin has revealed details of a new short story set in his Westeros universe, focused on the bloody and incestuous Targaryen family history.

The Sons of the Dragon will be published in a fantasy anthology called The Book of Swords in October. Chronicling the reigns of the second and third Targaryen kings, Aenys I and Maegor the Cruel, the story will also explore what happened to their families, friends and enemies during their time in power.

In the world of Westeros, both kings reigned roughly 250 years before the main storyline of Game of Thrones begins, when their descendent Daenerys begins her attempt to reclaim power.

In the Game of Thrones reference book The World of Ice and Fire, written in the voice of historian Yandel, Aenys I is described as being a dreamer, alchemist and womaniser. Weak and indecisive as a ruler, Aenys flees the throne in the midst of a religious uprising, spawned from the populace’s disgust at his having arranged the marriage of his son and daughter to one another. His half-brother, Maegor, inherits the throne and embarks on a series of brutal acts of revenge on those who question his right to rule, using torture, execution and his enormous dragon to keep would-be dissenters in line.

“He is better remembered as Maegor the Cruel, and it was a well-earned sobriquet, for no crueller king ever sat the Iron Throne,” Yandel writes. “His reign began with blood and ended in blood.”

Guarding the Realm – Fantasy Flight Games

We have a new chapter pack announcement! Below is a blurb, but be sure to follow the link to check out the full article and preview cards on FFG’s site!

She would be waiting on Dragonstone as well, waiting in all her beauty and all her power, with her god and her shadows and his king. The red priestess had always seemed loyal to Stannis, until now. She has broken him, as a man breaks a horse.
–George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce Guarding the Realm, the second Chapter Pack in the Blood and Gold cycle for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game!

Great changes are coming to Westeros, played out through countless smaller stories. Jaime Lannister has been freed from the prisons of Riverrun and makes his way towards King’s Landing as a captive of Brienne of Tarth. Jon Snow has turned his cloak and fallen in with wildlings, while struggling to keep his true loyalties secret. Robb Stark fights to reclaim the loyalty of his bannermen, Daenerys Targaryen lays her plans to acquire an army of eunuchs, and Davos Seaworth returns to Dragonstone with a dream of assassinating the red priestess, Melisandre. Though the violence of the War of the Five Kings has paused, the intrigues and plots behind the scenes have never been stronger—or more dangerous.
