Two Guys, One Deck: Targaryen Banner of the Wolf

Fallback Image

In this article series, Aaron and I will be building a deck together and providing you with the fruits of our labor (along with some discussion; mostly our discussion). This week we will be building a Targaryen Banner of the Wolf deck.

Alex
So, what do you want to build this week?

Aaron
Targaryen Banner of the Wolf?

Alex
Sure. War plots with Khal Drogo and Vanguard of the North? Or a Daenerys deck with Arya, Bran, and Sansa?

I’m leaning toward Daenerys because I think it’s a better deck, but the other is more “fun.”

Aaron
I think the Daenerys “good stuff” deck.

Last time we didn’t build a Daenerys deck, so let’s build one this week.

Alex
If it’s a Daenerys deck, then I’m starting off with 3 Dragons, 3 Dracarys!, and 3 Daenerys.

Could possibly cut 1 copy of Drogon and/or Viserion if we need the space later.

Aaron
Agreed. Let’s look at which Stark cards we want next.

3 Steward, 3 Bran, 3 Arya for sure.

Alex
Definitely. Bran adds protection for Daenerys and Arya is good.

Aaron
Arya adds Stealth to help push through some challenges and the Steward is good for setup.

Alex
Handmaiden is also a card that goes in a Daenerys deck and it works with Arya and also gives Sansa some synergy if we want to include at least one copy of her.

Aaron
I think 1 Sansa is fine.

She’s a good card, but I don’t want to worry about trying to protect her if we run additional copies.

Alex
Agreed. Fill in the last two spots with Tumblestone Knight?

Aaron
Yes. They have one less STR than Braided Warrior, but we get good use of that power icon.

Alex
It works well with Plaza of Punishment.

Okay, let’s go through the characters by cost. How many copies of Viserys to go with the 6 reducers?

Aaron
I vote 2.

Alex
2 is how many I usually use. I might use 3 in a Fealty deck.

On to the 2 cost characters.

Aaron
2 copies of Handmaiden?

Alex
Yes. Along with 2 copies of Tumblestone, and 3 copies of both Bran and Viserion.

How many copies of Jorah? I usually use all 3.

Aaron
I usually use 2, but we can go with all 3 for now and see if we can keep it.

For the higher cost characters, do we want Khal Drogo?

Alex
I was going to leave him out. Maybe use those spots for Varys instead.

Aaron
What about Khal Drogo, Varys, and Illyrio all in one spot? Use 1 of each along with 2 Summons?

Alex
I like it. It will allow for some versatility of support options to go with Daenerys.

I’ve been doing that myself lately, using more singles and doubles to increase the diversity and number of options available to me during a game.

Aaron
Okay, that gives us 37 characters. We should probably include a Littlefinger for draw.

Alex
That sounds good to me.

Aaron
The only character I am sad about missing is Unsullied.

Alex
We could cut 1 Drogon and/or Viserion and/or Jorah to make room for some.

Aaron
Nah, let’s just keep it as is for now. Maybe we can make those adjustments after some games.

Alex
Now for locations. 6 neutrals of course, 2 Illyrio’s Estate and 2 Plaza of Punishment?

Aaron
3 Estates I think. We’re heavily Targaryen for our characters.

Alex
24 Targaryen characters, but a lot of them are dupes.

Aaron
I hate being resource starved, but I’ll go with 10 locations for now.

Alex
Okay, so we have room for 12 events and attachments – 3 of which are Dracarys! and probably 2 should be Tears of Lys.

Aaron
3 Fire and Blood?

Alex
I typically only use 2 copies of Fire and Blood.

Aaron
With 9 Dragons I want 3 Fire and Blood.

If we don’t see a dupe or Fire and Blood early, having 2 dead cards for each Dragon seems bad, particularly against Wildfire Assault.

Alex
I’m sold. It also helps protect against an early kill on Daenerys or Jorah.

Aaron
Any other events?

Alex
Nah. Maybe Support of the People, but I don’t think it’ll be easy enough to trigger.

Aaron
What about Hand’s Judgement?

Daenerys is important, and that adds protection.

Alex
We have 4 spots left in the deck. 2 Hand’s Judgment?

Of course, we also have Bran in the deck serving a similar function already.

Aaron
2 Hand’s Judgement and 2 Bodyguard?

A very protected Daenerys isn’t a bad thing.

Alex
Maybe 1 Hand’s Judgement and 3 Bodyguard instead?

Bodyguard is better for setup and there are a lot of other targets for it with Arya, Bran, and Sansa.

Aaron
What about Syrio’s Training? A lot of good targets.

Alex
Daenerys, Arya, Sansa, Bran, reducers, Illyrio, Varys, Littlefinger.

That could be good. Also good for setup.

Aaron
So, 2 Syrio’s Training and 2 Hand’s Judgement?

Or 2 Syrio’s Training and 2 Bodyguard?

Alex
We also have Fire and Blood and duplicates for protection, Syrio’s Training gives us more options in the deck. I like it for sure.

What about Seal of the Hand for the last two spots?

Aaron
I don’t think we can afford to play Seal of the Hand. It’s just too expensive.

For the last two spots, how about Bodyguard instead of Hand’s Judgement. Gives more choices for an opposing Confiscation.

Alex
Sounds good to me. We’ve got a 60 card draw deck then.

Aaron
Wait! We need one more.

Alex
You can add the third Illyrio’s Estate back in, I’m going to stay at 60.

Plots? I think Calling the Banners, A Noble Cause, and Summons are in for sure.

Aaron
Also Calm Over Westeros, another Summons, Marched to the Wall, and Confiscation.

Alex
Looks good, the only thought that I have is a Counting Coppers instead of the second Summons.

Card draw is pretty light in Targaryen if we don’t have Daenerys, though I suppose Summons helps to get Daenerys.

Aaron
Summons can also be used to grab Littlefinger if we need the draw. But there are a lot of single characters, so  2 Summons makes that work.

Alex
That’s right, we also have Littlefinger, so Summons can be used to get him or Daenerys if we need to draw cards.

Aaron
Exactly. We should also be setting up pretty hard with this deck too.

So there will be some extra draw through larger setups.

Alex
Indeed. Banner of the Wolf adds a lot of good cheap stuff to an already low Targaryen curve.

I think it is an underrated banner, but it gives a really solid, cheap character curve to complement a strong main faction.

Aaron
I’m a fan.

I use it a lot with Lannister. Surprise to no one.

Alex
I would play this deck.

Aaron
Me too, it’s probably really good.
